1701 AD - Preview

1701 AD can not be easily described as being in a specific game genre. It combines strategy, city building, and economic management in one. Not many developers have been able to create games that successfully mix several genres into one game. 1701 AD is looking good so far though, according to a GameSpy preview. As governor of a New World settlement your job is to expand your little town and make it industrial, prosperous and strong enough to counter attacks by enemy forces. Besides hostile nations, you will also encounter pirates who crave for the gold your town possesses. Planning your production chain is very important to ensuring your economy runs smoothly. Micro-management is a pretty big part of the game, though it’s made easier with some automated processes. Release date of this game is still unknown.

Players take on the role of a New World governor trying to turn a backwater colony into a thriving industrial center. Your starting island should provide your basic needs, but before long you’ll need to branch out and colonize other nearby islands to get resources for the long haul. Stepping outside of your home turf will inevitably lead to conflicts with a colorful cast of colonial-era characters, from rival nations to natives to pirates.

The world of 1701 is pleasantly stylized from the moment you start laying out the foundations of your city. The colors are bright and crisp. Shimmering cobalt blue ocean waves ripple against detailed coastlines. Zoom in and you can see the exaggerated motions of cartoony settlers going about their daily business, while trees wave in the breeze and seagulls whirl overhead. When you’re doing well, your citizens celebrate in the streets, to the point of sending out a tiny colorful marching band. This is the kind of place you don’t mind spending a lot of time in.
